    Universal design for learningUniversal design for learning

    This continuing professional development event invites you to consider what an inclusive higher education provider looks and feels like today, and more importantly what it will be in the future, with a specific focus on the experience of disabled students.

    Produced in collaboration with De Montfort University, this event is designed from the perspective that disability is caused and facilitated by our approaches and practices, as opposed to being the acceptable natural consequence of impairment.

    The Disability Enhancement Programme at De Montfort University, which heavily informed the Department for Education guidance ‘Inclusive teaching and learning in higher education as a route to excellence’, outlines how one institution is achieving student inclusivity, for example through the application of a Universal Design for Learning framework. Using this programme as a focused case study, you’ll be invited to:

    • Work collaboratively to develop specific models of what constitutes an inclusive institution for today and the future.
    • Discuss barriers to successful institutional progress, with a clear focus on how to overcome these.
    • Plan strategic approaches to aid advancement of student inclusivity within your own organisation.

    By the end of the day you’ll be able to:

    • Clearly and concisely articulate your vision for what your institution needs to achieve for a 'truly inclusive student experience'.
    • Consider how to position this vision in a way that will achieve holistic buy-in.
    • Identify the key stakeholders you need to engage and influence, as well as considered ways to approach this.
    • Develop personal, departmental or institutional action points to facilitate progress in student inclusivity.
    You should attend this event if you’re a Student Services professional or academic leading work in this area. The day will be most beneficial if you encourage your academic and/or professional colleagues to attend, so that you can engage collaboratively.

    Location, time and price

    This one day event takes place at the Holiday Inn Royal Victoria in Sheffield.

    Registration opens at 09:30, and the first session starts at 10:00.

    Session 1: Technology to enable and develop inclusivity in a higher education institution
    (Ian Pettit and Heather Conboy, Enhancing Learning through Technology Project Officers, and Jina Ali, Assistive Technology Officer, De Montfort University)
    This session explores the implementation of a site-wide multimedia platform, making assistive technologies available to everyone, and technology in the curriculum to enhance teaching practise. Discuss how to overcome the issues and challenges you may encounter when replicating this practise in your own context.
    Session 2: Anticipatory approaches to teaching, learning and assessment... it's just good teaching practise!

    This session outlines the underpinning staff development and training offer for Universal Design for Learning at De Montfort University, and discusses the challenges and opportunities of this major pedagogical enhancement.
    Session 3: Professional services as a key stakeholder in delivering an inclusive student experience

    Universal Design for Learning principles are essential to the development of services and support at university, and for this to be most effective it needs to be a joined up approach. Some students will continue require reasonable adjustments to their learning and living environments and through the Disabled Students’ Allowances. How do professional services position themselves in relation to this?

    AMOSSHE winter conferenceBuilding belonging: the role and impact of residences on student success

    The AMOSSHE winter conference 2018 explores how Student Services and colleagues can develop engaging, supportive residential environments, which encourage a sense of belonging and contribute to student success. Build your expertise through three key perspectives, focusing on students who live in university accommodation:

    • Induction and transition – building engagement and a sense of belonging at key transitions in residences.
    • Creating safe, supportive living environments that enhance the residential experience and foster student success.
    • Crisis management – dealing with challenges and crises in residences to ensure that the whole community is supported.

    Call for posters

    We're trying something new at the 2018 winter conference. We want to create a space for you to showcase your good practice, innovative ideas, and success stories. You can take part by presenting a poster that summarises your work and achievements.

    We want your proposals for posters that give an insight into how you've developed engaging, supportive residential environments that foster student success in higher education. The deadline to submit a poster proposal is 17:00 on Thursday 14 December 2017
